What is the difference between a Veterinarian and a Veterinarian Technician?

Veterinarians provide medical care for animals. The primary responsibilities of a veterinarian include:

Advising clients on care of their pets
  • Administering immunizations
  • Conducting physical examinations
  • Providing emergency care
  • Performing surgery and dental procedures
  • Prescribing medication
  • Euthanizing animals

In addition to being able to diagnose and treat the animals, veterinarians also communicate effectively with the animals’ owners. This often includes explaining diagnoses and treatments in down-to-earth, common language.

The average veterinarian completes 4 1/2 years of undergraduate education, taking classes such as biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, physics, microbiology, anatomy and physiology, math, animal science, and more…and that’s just to prepare them for veterinary school. Some veterinarians already have a Master’s degree or PhD before they enter veterinary school.

In veterinary school, the 4-year education is equal to what medical school students receive – but for a number of animal species instead of just one.

Once they graduate from a U.S. veterinary school, they receive a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or Veterinary Medical Doctor (VMD) degree (the degrees are different in other countries). They are now veterinarians and are qualified to perform the duties of the profession.

Veterinary technicians are animal nurses (and much more). In addition to their nursing duties, they act as patient advocates, phlebotomists, radiology technicians, laboratory technicians, anesthesia technicians, and surgery technicians. Except tasks legally restricted to veterinarians, such as diagnosing disease conditions, performing surgery, prescribing medications, and prognosing medical outcomes, veterinary technicians are trained to do everything a veterinary hospital requires to run smoothly.

Veterinary technicians must receive formal training in the knowledge and skills required to handle their many daily responsibilities by graduating from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA)-accredited college with an associate’s degree in veterinary technology. The program curriculum covers a wide range of topics, including:

  • Animal anatomy and physiology
  • Medical terminology
  • Medical dosage calculations
  • Animal handling
  • Animal nursing
  • Pharmacology
  • Anesthesia
  • Laboratory skills (e.g., hematology, urinalysis, microbiology)
  • Radiology
  • Surgical nursing

After completing an 18- to 36-month course, veterinary technicians also must pass the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE) to obtain a license. Although veterinary clinics might employ veterinary assistants to provide some patient care, many tasks are legally restricted to veterinary technicians who have the education and skills to provide a higher level of care.
